Founded nearly a century before the American revolution in 1682, the city’s storied past is on display in its many historical museums and attractions, such as Norfolk’s Cannonball and Civil War Trails. Norfolk is best known as a military town, home to several major U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, NASA, Marines and Army facilities.

A historic and cultural center for the entire Mid-Atlantic region, Norfolk is home to critically acclaimed festivals, theatrical productions and nationally recognized museums including the Chrysler Museum of Art, where works by Manet, Cézanne, Jackson Pollack and Andy Warhol are on display. While certainly influenced by its Southern heritage and coastal surroundings, Norfolk is also emerging as a world-food destination, embracing flavors and cuisines from far-flung regions such as the Middle East and India. For tastes close to home, try O'Sulivan's Wharf; if you're looking for something a bit more exotic hit Azar’s Café & Market Ghent.

About 20 miles away, Virginia Beach offers sand and surf for Virginians and visitors alike. You'll probably want to stay at one of the oceanfront hotels for easiest access to the deep blue. And luckily you won't be shorted in choices as hotels line the beachfront. If you are making a day trip, however, don’t fret. Six miles of public beaches are yours for the taking.
