Eligible purchases do NOT include fees, interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers' checks, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person transactions, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. American Express relies on the transaction date submitted to us by the merchant, which may differ from the date you make a purchase, to determine whether the purchase counts toward the purchase requirement in that calendar year. This means that in some cases your purchases may not count toward the purchase requirement in the year in which you made the purchases. For example, if you make a purchase on December 31 and the merchant lists the transaction date as January 1 when they submit the transaction data to us, your purchase will be counted in the calendar year which began on that January 1. Additional Card Member(s) are not eligible to receive MQMs through the Status Boost benefit, however, all eligible purchases by the Additional Card Member(s) will count towards the Basic Card Member's spend level to reach the Status Boost thresholds. To receive the MQMs, your account must not be canceled or past due at the time the MQMs are posted to your account. MQMs only count towards Medallion Status. MQMs cannot be redeemed toward Award Travel or other Delta redemption options. Card Members are only eligible to receive one annual bonus per threshold per calendar year for each type of eligible Delta SkyMiles Card (e.g., Platinum or Reserve) that is linked to the same SkyMiles account. MQMs can be kept by the Basic Card Member or gifted to someone else. MQM gift recipients must have a valid SkyMiles account. If a MQM gift recipient is not designated within 30 days of the MQMs being made available, the MQMs will be deposited in the Basic Card Member's SkyMiles account. You can claim or gift MQMs by logging into delta.com and reviewing your SkyMiles account. Eligibility for Delta's Medallion Status is not based on MQMs alone. Delta SkyMiles members can qualify for Medallion Status through a combination of miles or segments flown and annual spending on qualifying flights. Basic Economy fares do not earn miles or towards Medallion Status. Full terms: delta.com/memberguide. For more information about the requirements for Medallion Status, please visit Medallion Program Overview.

Platinum Status Boost

Effective January 1, 2024, this benefit will no longer be available.

If in any calendar year eligible purchases on the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card are $25,000 or more, the Basic Card Member will be awarded 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles ("MQMs" as defined in the Delta SkyMiles Membership Guide and Program Rules). If in that same calendar year eligible purchases on the Card are $50,000 or more, the Basic Card Member will be awarded an additional 10,000 MQMs. The close of the calendar year is December 31, without regard to the time of the year that the account is opened. This means that for the first year of Card Membership, the Card Member’s eligibility period for the Status Boost® benefit may be less than twelve months. Eligible purchases means purchases for goods and services minus returns and other credits. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees, interest charges, cash advances, purchases of travelers' checks, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person transactions, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Mileage Credit Restrictions

Mileage will be credited only for travel flown by the SkyMiles Member on scheduled service flights. Mileage is credited to the SkyMiles account of the traveler, regardless of who pays for the ticket. Mileage from one account cannot be pooled or combined with the mileage of another individual’s account. Each Member must earn his/her own mileage credit. Mileage will only be credited if the date-of-birth in the Member’s SkyMiles account matches the date-of-birth of the Member traveling, regardless of who paid for the ticket.

Delta flights, airline partner flights, hotel stays, and car rentals are eligible for credit in only one mileage program per itinerary and cannot be transferred once recorded. Attempts to obtain mileage credit in the SkyMiles program as a result of travel or other qualifying activity for which the Member has already received credit in any other mileage or loyalty program is prohibited.

SkyMiles credit (inclusive of mileage, MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs) will not be given for the following:

  • Basic Economy tickets purchased on or after December 9, 2021 for flights departing on or after January 1, 2022, are not eligible to earn miles in the SkyMiles Program or earn credit towards Medallion Status.
  • Refunded, void or unused tickets, including unused nonrefundable tickets.
  • Airline employees, travel agents, tour conductors, and/or other persons traveling on a nonrevenue basis or travel industry/cargo customer discount fares.
  • Infants (under age two) traveling without paying an applicable fare. Mileage will be credited to the accounts of infants traveling on a ticket purchased at the applicable fare.
  • Free tickets of any kind, including without limitation SkyMiles Award Tickets.
  • Tickets purchased to carry excess baggage such as musical instruments and pets or to provide extra space for the primary passenger.
  • Charter flights.
  • Tickets issued at fares subject to rules that exclude the earning of mileage credit for the fare. Fares excluded from earning mileage credit frequently change, particularly on Airline Partners. You should always check with Delta, the issuing carrier or your travel agent at the time of booking to ensure that the fare you are purchasing qualifies for mileage credit.
  • Bookings made through some Internet sites as described at those sites, including without limitation tickets purchased through priceline.com and Hotwire.com.
  • The portion of the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges purchased with Pay with Miles redemptions.
  • Travel which U.S. carriers are prohibited from providing or facilitating under U.S. sanctions regulations or other applicable law.
  • Travel on partner-operated flights to destinations that U.S. carriers are prohibited from providing or facilitating under U.S. sanctions regulations or other applicable law.
  • Travel to Cuba on partner-operated flights.

Additional SkyMiles credit restrictions may apply to travel on our partner airlines. For current information on these restrictions, please visit Airline Partners.

Most miles earned through non-airline partner offers are bonus miles. Bonus miles do not count towards Medallion Status or Million Miler Status. Delta is not responsible for goods or services offered by any companies participating in miles promotions.

Exception fares sometimes referred to as “specialty” or “unpublished” fares including, but not limited to bulk, consolidator, vacation or tour package fare products earn miles based on a percentage of distance flown* as determined by the fare class paid as published at Exception Fares at the time of travel. Please check with your travel agent or Exception Fares for details.

Account Discrepancies

You are responsible for verifying that mileage, MQMs, MQSs and MQDs for qualifying activity are credited to your account. All account discrepancies must be reported in writing within nine months of date of activity. Delta is not responsible for the delivery of incoming correspondence. Verbal notification is not accepted. You should maintain copies of tickets/ticket receipts and boarding pass(es) for your records until proper credit appears in your SkyMiles statement.

If mileage credit for a qualifying Delta or Delta Connection® flight or qualifying partner activity is not recorded on your statement within 90 days (30 days for Delta/Delta Connection), please follow these procedures:

For Delta and Delta Connection you can request mileage credit online.

For our airline partners, you can request mileage credit online through the Comment/Complaint form. Or, you can send a copy of your airline ticket/ticket receipt and boarding pass(es) to:

Delta Air Lines, Inc.,
SkyMiles Account Support
Dept. 654
P.O. Box 20532
Atlanta, GA 30320-2532
or fax: 404-773-1945

In order for Delta to approve a mileage credit request, the date-of-birth in the Member’s SkyMiles account must match the date-of-birth of the Member traveling, regardless of who paid for the ticket.

If you are outside of the U.S., you may send the documents to your nearest international office.

Altered or illegible documents will not be accepted. Alteration of documents or other attempts to obtain mileage credit to which the Member is not entitled are prohibited.

For car, hotel, and miscellaneous partner activity: if mileage credit has not been recorded on your SkyMiles statement within 90 days after qualifying activity occurs, contact the partner directly.

Mileage Requirement

Mileage earned is subject to compliance with all requirements of the individual partner’s mileage offer, such as membership in the partner’s loyalty program in some cases.

Mileage Upgrade Awards

All Awards are subject to availability and additional taxes and fees may apply. Fare class restrictions vary by region. To check availability or request an upgrade, contact a Reservations specialist.

  1. Upgrade Offer: Mileage Upgrade Award is valid for upgraded one-way travel on most Delta Air Lines -and certain Virgin Atlantic/Air France/KLM and Aeromexico-operated flights worldwide, including connecting flights, between the origin and destination of a ticketed fare. Member must have a sufficient mileage balance to upgrade each requested passenger for the eligible one-way flight segment in the reservation. Any stopovers are governed by the fare rule, and additional mileage will be required for broken fares. All rules of the fare purchased will apply except as changed by this offer. SkyMiles mileage credit will be based upon purchased fare class. Space is limited and subject to availability. Seats may not be available on all flights, in all markets, or for select fare classes. With the exception of Virgin Atlantic, Mileage Upgrade Awards allow a one cabin upgrade from the purchased fare.
  2. Eligibility: Eligible only if flights in the reservation are not being credited to another airline’s frequent traveler program. The following unpublished fares are not eligible for Mileage Upgrade Awards: Delta bulk fares, companion fares, group fares, certain pricing programs, Round the World fares, and International Bereavement Fares. Award Travel of any kind cannot be upgraded with a separate award or by paying an additional fee.
  3. Not Combinable: Mileage Upgrade Awards may not be combined with any other promotional or discount offers or SkyMiles program awards. Valid only with a published qualifying fare.
  4. Valid Carrier: Valid only on Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection® carrier-operated flights, and certain Virgin Atlantic/Air France/KLM and Aeromexico-operated flights. For Air France-operated flights, upgrades are available from Economy to Premium Economy to Business only on transatlantic Joint Venture flights between U.S. cities and Paris (CDG and ORY). Upgrades are not available on any Air France flights operated using a Boeing 747 aircraft. For Air France/KLM operated flights, upgrade request must be completed 24 hours before the departure. Mileage Upgrade Awards on Virgin Atlantic are only available on flights marketed by Delta Air Lines. Mileage Upgrade awards on Aeromexico are only available on flights marketed by Delta Air Lines and operated by Aeromexico for travel between the United States and Mexico. 5. Applicable Routes: North America: Valid for use on one-way travel on published fares and routings within or between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Northern South America: Valid for use on one-way travel on published fares and routing between North America and Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. Miles + Cash Award Tickets

Miles + Cash is a redemption option on Award Tickets offered to SkyMiles Members during the booking process on select round-trip flights, that allows the Member to pay for their flight using a combination of miles and dollars.

Except as expressly permitted in writing by Delta, tickets purchased using Miles + Cash are Award tickets and are subject to all the limitations of Award tickets, including being ineligible for mileage accrual. Vouchers, eCredit, gift cards, unused tickets, etc., cannot be used on Miles + Cash itineraries. Award tickets are subject to availability and additional taxes and fees may apply. Redemption requirements for Award tickets differ based upon flight(s) sought. Miles + Cash may not be available in all markets or on all flights. All SkyMiles program rules apply.

Mileage purchases (the cash portion) in Miles + Cash transactions are nonrefundable. In the event of ticket changes or cancellations, miles, including miles purchased as part of a Miles + Cash transaction, will be redeposited in the Member’s SkyMiles account. For travel originating from the United States and Canada to anywhere in the world (including flights operated by joint venture and codeshare partners), Members may change or cancel Award tickets for travel without a redeposit or change fee, excluding Basic Economy fares. For some travel originating outside the United States and Canada, Basic Economy Award ticket restrictions will vary and may be non-cancelable or may be changeable for a fee. These charges, when applicable, are the responsibility of the passenger and will be collected at the time of booking.

Responsibility for Taxes, Fees & Other Charges

The payment of any taxes, fees, and other government or airport-imposed charges is the responsibility of the passenger. Award Travel tickets will be required to pay the September 11th Security Fee of $5.60 per one-way trip. A flight segment is defined as a takeoff and a landing.

Award Travel tickets for international travel, including for travel to/from PR/U.S. Virgin Islands, are required to pay U.S. User Fees (APHIS, INCS and Customs) and September 11th Security Fee of up to $40.00 and foreign user, inspection, security or other similarly based charges, fees or taxes of up to $400, depending on itinerary. Award redemption requires payment of at least $11.20 in U.S. government taxes and fees for domestic itineraries and may include up to $600 for foreign government taxes and fees and/or carrier-imposed fees for international itineraries. Taxes and fees for Award Travel are the responsibility of the passenger and must be paid at the time the ticket is booked. In some instances, the government may elect to collect the fees directly from the passenger. Some airline partners charge a fee for Award Travel redemptions for travel on their airlines. These fees, when applicable, are the responsibility of the passenger and will be collected at the time of booking. Additional fees apply for some mileage transactions, for example:

  • Award redemption at an airport ticket location or Delta city ticket office
  • Replacement of lost or stolen tickets
  • Tickets issued by Delta Reservation Sales

Changes to origin, destination, routing, date and time are permitted except for Basic Economy tickets, and the mileage difference (and any applicable taxes) for the new Award ticket will apply. For details, visit our Baggage & Travel Fees page.

This is not a complete list, and Delta reserves the right to change fees or add additional fees at any time without advance notice. Please visit delta.com/fees for our current fee schedule.

Routing

Routing restrictions apply for Award Travel. Valid routings vary based on the operating carriers of the Award Ticket. Any exceptions or variations to these routings may require additional mileage for the Award.

Standby

Standby is permitted only if allowed by the carrier on which travel will occur.

Ticketing

Award Tickets may be issued only by Delta/Delta Connection carriers and only on Delta ticket stock.

All other air travel must be ticketed separately from Award Travel. For international Award Travel, if a published routing does not exist between two cities or service is not offered via a published routing, travel must be within the maximum permitted mileage. Completely open tickets will not be issued.

Mileage Upgrade Awards must have a Main Cabin ticket issued prior to confirming an upgrade Award Seat. Upgraded tickets using a Mileage Upgrade Award must be issued by Delta.

Ticket Validity

An Award Ticket to domestic destinations, governed by domestic tariffs, requires all travel be completed within one year from the date of the original ticket issue, unless specified otherwise for a promotional Award Ticket.

For destinations governed by international tariffs, unless specified otherwise for a promotional Award Ticket, a ticket for international transportation is valid one year from date of issue of the original ticket. An unused ticket must be reissued and travel must commence within one year from date of issue of the original ticket. Once travel commences, all travel must be completed within one year from the date travel commenced.

Reissue does not extend ticket validity.

Unused Award Tickets

Changes to origin, destination, routing, date and time are permitted except for Basic Economy tickets, and the mileage difference (and any applicable taxes) for the new Award ticket will apply. For details, visit our Baggage & Travel Fees page. In addition, changes and cancellations of Award tickets within 72 hours of departure will no longer result in the loss of miles on Award tickets. Taxes and fees for unused Award tickets are refundable upon request.

Once travel has commenced on an Award ticket, the Award is considered used. Mileage will not be credited back to the account for the unused portion of the ticket. For information, contact a SkyMiles representative directly by calling 1-800-323-2323. If you are a Medallion® Member, check the Contact Us section in the Fly Delta app for your dedicated phone line. Unused Pay with Miles tickets are subject to the Pay with Miles terms and conditions.

Upgrade with Miles

You can use your miles to pay the difference in a Main Cabin fare and a premium cabin fare for eligible flights within the U.S. 50.

Eligibility:

Upgrade with Miles tickets are eligible on select Delta and Delta Connection® carrier flights booked under the DL code at delta.com or Delta Reservations.

Restrictions:

Redemption requirements may differ based on fare. The amount of miles that can be used on an Upgrade with Miles ticket is based on the SkyMiles Member's account balance. Any miles used will be automatically and permanently deducted from the Member's SkyMiles account at the time of the redemption. For reservations that include multiple passengers, only one SkyMiles account may be used to redeem for an Upgrade with Miles ticket. Upgrade with Miles applies to all passengers in the reservation. Not combinable with certificates, eCredits, vouchers, or with any other discounts. Except as expressly permitted in writing by Delta, Upgrade with Miles tickets are eligible for mileage accrual, Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs). Mileage credit will be earned based on the cash amount of the ticket purchased (base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges remaining and paid in currency after miles are applied to the ticket total). Upgrade with Miles tickets are also eligible to earn Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) for the portion of the base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges remaining and paid in currency after miles are applied to the ticket total. All Upgrade with Miles are subject to availability, and additional taxes and fees may apply. All fare rules, restrictions, advance purchase requirements, and availability are per rules of the upgraded ticket purchased. All SkyMiles program rules apply.

Refunds/Reissues:

Except for tickets refunded under Delta's Risk Free Cancellation policy, miles redeemed for Upgrade with Miles tickets cannot be re-deposited in the Member's SkyMiles Account — even for fully refundable fares. In the event of a ticket being reissued, any residual dollar value between the original price of the ticket purchased using Upgrade with Miles and the reissued ticket price, can only be returned as a nonrefundable eCredit valid for future travel. eCredit will be valid for 1 year from original Upgrade with Miles ticket issue date. Residual eCredit value will follow current Delta eCredit rules and will not be applicable on non-transportation fees. Unused Upgrade with Miles tickets can be used as an eCredit when it is a primary exchange document. All Upgrade with Miles terms and conditions will apply to any ticket purchased using an unused Upgrade with Miles ticket.

In the event of a refund (including fully refundable fares) only the paid portion of a refundable fare will be credited back to the credit card, and the Upgrade with Miles portion of the fare will be returned as non-refundable eCredit equivalent to the dollar value of the portion of the ticket redeemed with Upgrade with Miles. eCredit may be used to purchase future travel and Upgrade with Miles terms and conditions will not apply to such tickets. For non-refundable tickets, all fare rules apply.

In the event of a valid ticket cancellation under Delta's Risk Free Cancellation policy, Upgrade with Miles portion of the fare will be redeposited into the Member's SkyMiles account and the paid portion of the fare will be credited back to the credit card.

For more details about Upgrade with Miles, please visit Upgrade with Miles.

In order to receive the Medallion mileage bonus, a Member must earn Medallion Status through either the required Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs - U.S.-based Members only). Members who attain Status through the Million Miler program or Choice Benefits program will also earn the Medallion mileage bonus.

Rollover Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs)

The Rollover MQMs benefit is exclusive to Delta, and only for our Medallion Members. Special for 2020 and 2021, all MQMs that were in a Member’s account at the end of 2020 rolled over into 2021 and now will additionally roll over into 2022 – even if a Member hadn’t earned Medallion Status; giving our Members an even bigger jumpstart on earning towards 2023 Status. Here’s an example of how Rollover MQMs worked in 2020: if a Member rolled over 20,000 MQMs from 2019 to 2020 and earned an additional 20,000 MQMs in 2020, the Member’s final balance on December 31, 2020 was 40,000 MQMs, and all 40,000 were rolled over and counted toward earning 2022 Medallion Status. If a Member had 5,000 MQMs in their account on December 31, 2020, all 5,000 were rolled over and counted toward earning 2022 Medallion Status.

In 2021, the Rollover MQMs will work the same as in 2020. Here’s an example of how Rollover MQMs will work for 2021: if a Member rolled over 20,000 MQMs from 2020 to 2021 and earned an additional 20,000 MQMs in 2021, the Member’s final balance on December 31, 2021 will be 40,000 MQMs, and all 40,000 will roll over and count toward earning 2023 Medallion Status. If a Member has 5,000 MQMs in their account on December 31, 2021, all 5,000 will roll over and count toward earning 2023 Medallion Status.

In a typical year, the Rollover MQMs benefit means MQMs earned in 2022 above a Member’s earned Medallion Tier will rollover to 2023 and count toward 2023 Medallion Status Qualification. Members who do not achieve any Tier of earned Medallion Status through the published requirements are ineligible for Rollover MQMs. Members who receive complimentary or gifted Medallion Status are only eligible for rollover MQMs if they also earn at least Silver Medallion Status through the published requirements. Members who successfully complete a Status Match Challenge are also eligible for Rollover MQMs based on their earned Medallion Status.

For example:

  • If a Member is gifted Gold Medallion Status in 2022 and also earns 30,000 MQMs and $3,000 MQDs in 2022, they will rollover 5,000 MQMs since they met the earned Silver Medallion Qualification requirements level.
  • If a Member is gifted Platinum Medallion Status in 2022 and also earns 22,000 MQMs and $7,000 MQDs in 2022, they will be ineligible for Rollover MQMs since they did not meet the qualification requirements for earned Silver Medallion Status.

Rollover MQMs will post to your SkyMiles account by the end of January each year.

Reclaim My Status

Effective January 1, 2024, the MQD Waiver and Status Boost benefits will no longer be available, and there will be a new way to earn toward Medallion Status with the Card. Learn more.

This offer is not transferable and eligibility/qualification for the offer is at the sole discretion of Delta Air Lines. Valid documentation and proof of incident is required and subject to approval. Offer valid for travel completed within 3 calendar months from the date you are notified of enrollment in Reclaim My Status (" Offer Period"). For example, if you are enrolled on 6/30/2021, only flights departing between 6/30/2021 and 9/30/2021 (at 11:59:59pm US Central Standard Time) will be credited towards the requirements. If accepted, you may only enroll in this offer once every three (3) years.

Complimentary Medallion Status during the Offer Period is effective the day after enrollment notification and will be valid for 3 calendar months. If you successfully fly the required amount of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) or Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs), and (for U.S.-based Members only) earn the required amount of Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) or qualify for the MQD Waiver* during the Offer Period, you will retain the applicable level of Medallion Status through 1/31/23.

MQMs, MQSs, and MQDs earned through travel on Delta, Delta Connection, and SkyMiles Partner Airlines will count towards Reclaim My Status. MQMs/MQSs/MQDs earned through other sources (such as MQMs earned through the Status Boost benefit with an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card), do not count towards Reclaim My Status.

*The MQDs requirement will be waived after you achieve the MQD Waiver. The MQD Waiver can be earned for Platinum, Gold, or Silver Medallion Status for Reclaim My Status after you make $25,000 or more in eligible purchases during the time period(s) listed below on an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card. The MQD Waiver can be earned for Diamond Medallion Status for Reclaim My Status after you make $250,000 or more in eligible purchases during the time period(s) listed below on an eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card. The timing for achieving the MQD Waiver for Reclaim My Status is as follows:

If your three-month Offer Period begins and ends in the same calendar year (for example, begins on 8/1/21 and ends on 11/1/21), you must achieve the MQD Waiver between January 1 of that calendar year and the end of your Offer Period. In this example, you would have from 1/1/21 through 11/1/21 to achieve the MQD Waiver.

If your Offer Period falls between two calendar years (for example, begins on 11/1/21 and ends on 2/1/22), you can reach the MQD Waiver through either of the following two options:

  • Option 1: the MQD Waiver will apply if you earn it at any time during the first calendar year. In this example, you would have from 1/1/21 through 12/31/21 to achieve the MQD Waiver.
  • Option 2: the MQD Waiver will apply if you earn it between the beginning of the second calendar year and the end of your Offer Period. In this example, you would have from 1/1/22 through 2/1/22 to achieve the MQD Waiver

Meeting either of the two options listed waives the MQD requirement for Reclaim My Status. You cannot combine your MQD Waiver spend between the two years. Remember, your MQD Waiver spend resets on January 1 each calendar year, and is not combined with any of your MQD Waiver spend from the previous year.

Medallion Status must be earned in subsequent years through the published qualification thresholds.

Members who successfully complete Reclaim My Status to keep Medallion Status through 1/31/2023 will have their account updated in the system within seven business days of completion of the requirements.

Members who successfully complete Reclaim My Status for 2021 Medallion Status may be eligible for Rollover MQMs based on their earned Medallion Status (but only for MQMs above the published Medallion Status qualification threshold).

Medallion Status Exceptions for U.S. Military Members

  • Members of the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard who were not able to use their Medallion Status or did not requalify for Medallion Status as a result of their deployment are eligible for a one-time Medallion Status extension. Upon return from deployment, military members are eligible to extend their Medallion Status for one additional Medallion year upon providing a copy of their deployment orders. For example, if the extension was granted anytime in 2020, your Medallion Status will be maintained until the end of the 2021 Medallion Year on January 31, 2022. If the extension is granted anytime in 2021, your Medallion Status will be maintained until the end of the 2022 Medallion Year on January 31, 2023. The Medallion Status request can be submitted once the military member returns home from deployment. Requests may not be made before or during deployment.

  • Any deployment will qualify, regardless of length, as long as it takes place during the time they have Medallion Status. Members do not currently need to be on active duty to request an exception. Reserve members are eligible.
