Merida Activities

A getaway to the Yucatan Peninsula isn't complete without visiting ancient ruins, including the most well-known: Chichen Itza. Gather here to watch the shadow of feathered, serpent-god Kukulcan make its way down the steps of the pyramid during the spring and fall equinoxes. Or, visit the site of Dzibilchaltun to browse 16th-century Spanish swords and weapons.

Explore the quiet Plaza Grande, where the 16th-century Cathedral of San Ildefonso — the oldest cathedral on the continent — provides a dramatic backdrop. Then, hang out in the thriving city center. Dine on Yucatan’s world-renowned fare; browse authentic hammock and trinket shops; or join in dancing and billiards at one of the local venues. Downtown also features the City Museum, full of archeological, pre-Hispanic artifacts and the Cathedral of Merida, one of the oldest churches in the Americas.

Merida features a variety of natural caves known as “cenotes,” used by the Maya as a water source and refuge during storms. Enjoy a refreshing swim, or dive in the crystalline waters — it’s an absolutely stunning scene. Nature lovers, find your stride at Celestun, one of the most important national parks in Mexico. Visitors come from all over to witness more than 300 different species of birds, in particular, the pink flamingo. Also, head to the village of Progreso, where you can take a boat out to the Alacranes Reef to swim alongside its impressive marine life.
