Explore The Islands of Tahiti

Halfway between California and Australia lies one of the world’s most popular tropical destinations: 118 glorious islands in the South Pacific known as French Polynesia. One of five archipelagos, the Society Islands are the definition of paradise, and home to the breathtaking islands of Tahiti, Tetiaroa, Moorea and Bora Bora. You can get to Bora Bora, about 160 miles from Tahiti, by taking a flight.

Discover the richness of the South Pacific’s friendly people, interesting culture and spirited heritage, all while experiencing iconic beauty that has lured travelers here for centuries. Travelers of all ages can embrace the warmth of the Polynesian people, whose love for Tahiti is evident through their expressions of music and dance.

The options for a variety of Tahitian experiences are as broad as your imagination — from natural and nautical to cultural. Scuba divers will cherish the warm, crystal-clear lagoons and swift ocean passes with schools of brightly colored fish, docile sharks and giant manta rays. Golfers can tee off on fairways framed by the extraordinary beauty of Tahiti’s west coast. Whether surfing, deep-sea fishing, horseback riding, seeing spectacular shows or spending a tranquil day at a rejuvenating spa, Tahiti offers an amazing world of relaxation, adventure and romance.

Fly by floatplane to Tetiaroa, a haven for birds, sea turtles and all kinds of marine life. Once a private getaway for Tahitian royalty, Tetiaroa captured Marlon Brando's attention in 1960 while he was on location shooting "Mutiny on the Bounty," and later became his private island escape. Less than five miles in diameter and surrounded by 13 islets, this virtually uninhabited atoll still charms visitors with coconut tree-dotted, untouched beaches and a joltingly blue lagoon.

Escape to Bora Bora for the ultimate honeymoon or tropical island adventure where you can be as active or inactive as you wish to be. Visit the main village of Vaitape and shop at the local boutiques or dine at one of Bora Bora's restaurants, including the legendary Bloody Mary's. You can also explore Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu on a guided hike or Jeep Safari tour. Since water is a way of life on the island, popular lagoon excursions include snorkeling, diving, cruising, fishing, paddle boarding, kitesurfing, jet skiing, and shark and ray feeding. You can also take your experience to new heights by parasailing or skydiving.

In Moorea, poetic threads of waterfalls tumble down green-velvet mountain cliffs, peaceful meadows show off nature's majesty, and villages with pastel-painted houses are encircled by hibiscus and birds of paradise gardens. Marvel at the panoramic views of Belvedere Overlook. Snorkel in the island’s shallow waters, taste pineapple at a road-side stand, shop for Moorea-made creations, or spend an afternoon relaxing in a Polynesian spa. Moorea is also a virtual liquid playground for snorkeling, jet skiing, canoeing, diving and nightly sunset sails.

Polynesian legend describes the Moorea’s panorama of volcanic ridges as the second dorsal fin of the fish that became the island of Tahiti. Moorea’s landscape and legend inspired the mythical film "Bali Hai" that was based on James Michener's book, "Tales of the South Pacific." Besides its natural beauty, Moorea is blessed with many excellent restaurants, each in unique settings along the lagoon. Many resorts also offer a romantic, open-air ambience while serving the best of French, Italian, Chinese and Tahitian cuisines.

The economic heart of French Polynesia is Papeete, the capital of Tahiti. Along the waterfront are many welcoming shops, markets and jewelers. If you’re shopping for black pearls, don’t miss the Tahiti Pearl Market. The most popular souvenir to take home is the cotton pareu (wraparound sarong); they’re sold everywhere throughout the islands. Except in hotels, all shops are usually closed on Sundays.

From chic and elegant establishments to local and casual eateries, there are many restaurants to choose from throughout the islands. From Chinese to French, American to Japanese and Polynesian to Italian, the island of Tahiti offers a diverse selection of delicious cuisine. The private island of Tetiaroa offers two Polynesian restaurants in the only luxury resort on the island, The Brando. The island of Moorea serves simpler, local variety of dishes, with a pinch of Tahitian spices. Bora Bora also hosts a mixture of international cuisine, with most restaurants located within hotels and resorts.

Our vacation packages include round-trip airfare aboard a Delta Partner Airline to Tahiti Faa'a International Airport (PPT), Bora Bora Airport (BOB) or Moorea Airport (MOZ). Nonstop Delta flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tahiti (PPT) are now available.
