Rent a bike downtown and take off on the 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, which hugs Anchorage’s coastline all the way to Kincaid Park. Kincaid Park is one of the best places in town to see a wild moose. Stop by the Anchorage Museum for a history and science lesson or feast on Alaska salmon or king crab in one of many local restaurants. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center to tour life-size replicas of traditional villages, watch live music and dancing performances and see local art demonstrations.

Once you try the wild Alaska salmon, flaky halibut and monster king crab plucked fresh from the ocean, it will be difficult to go back to eating seafood dishes you make at home. For meat lovers, moose, bear, elk, caribou, reindeer and even mountain goats are served in many restaurants. And, reindeer sausage is a local fast-food fave.

In addition to the local food scene, Alaska boasts a thriving beer and coffee culture. Currently ranked eighth in the nation for breweries per capita, you can taste handcrafted brews at a growing number of brewpubs in Anchorage. Anchorage is also known for its drive-up coffee huts. Alaskans love to dance, so grab your partner and head out to a pub or club for live music or some ever-popular square dancing.
