Tulum Activities

Tulum is a unique destination in Mexico — where else can you find millennia-old ruins along powdery sands and azure waters, all beside a beach town within a jungle? In fact, the city was named because of its dramatic fortifications (Tulum means “wall” in Yucatec Maya), and now serves as one of the most visited archaeological zones in Mexico. From the towering pyramids in nearby Cobá to the striking structure of El Castillo, there is no shortage of ancient adventure in and around Tulum.

Just south of Tulum lies Sian Ka’an, a 1.3-million-acre reserve. Float down canals hand-dug by Mayans through the area’s wetlands and mangroves, as you observe everything from howler monkeys in treetop canopies to various bird species above incredibly blue lagoons.

You can spend the day getting lost along Tulum Beach Road — a six-mile, two-lane stretch lined with cafes, boutiques and art galleries. Or, if beach bum bliss is more your style, Tulum is sure to fit the bill with postcard-perfect seashores. If you want to make an unforgettable splash, enter Tulum’s underground cave system and go for a refreshing dip in a cenote, a natural sinkhole.
