Face Masks Required for Everyone's Safety
Delta customers and employees are required to wear a face mask, or appropriate cloth face covering over their nose and mouth throughout their travel.
Federal law requires each person to wear a mask at all times throughout flight, including during boarding and deplaning, while in the airport and during public transit. Refusal to wear a mask is a violation of federal law and may result in denial of boarding, removal from the aircraft, and/or penalties under federal law. If wearing oxygen masks is needed because of loss of cabin pressure or other events affecting aircraft ventilation, masks should be removed to accommodate oxygen masks.
Masks or face coverings are required from curb to claim throughout the airport, including these Delta touchpoints:
- Lobby Check-in
- Delta Sky Clubs
- Boarding Gate Areas
- Jet Bridges
- On board the aircraft for the duration of the flight
Masks must be worn at all times except while eating, drinking, or taking oral medications for brief periods. Prolonged periods of mask removal are not permitted for eating or drinking – masks need to be worn between bites and sips.
Children under the age of two are exempt from the mask requirement.
Types of Permitted Masks
CDC has specified the types of masks permitted for travel, opens in a new window. Delta recommends a surgical or medical mask, cloth mask with tightly woven fabric, or valve-free respirator (N95 or KN95) mask.
Keep in mind that:
- A mask or face covering should be secured to the head, including with ties or ear loops, and should fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face.
- If gaiters are worn, they should have two layers of fabric or be folded to make two layers.
- Plastic face shields or goggles may be used in addition to a mask but are not approved mask replacements.
- The following mask types are not approved: any mask with an exhaust valve, slits or punctures; bandanas; and scarves, ski masks, and balaclavas.
Mask Exemptions
Customers with unique mask requirements should bring the appropriate face covering that best meets their needs and CDC specifications. Customers with a disability who cannot wear a mask for reasons related to their individual disability are strongly encouraged to reconsider travel or should be prepared to complete a ‘Clearance-to-Fly’ process prior to departure at the airport. If you are a customer with a disability who requires this exemption, please arrive early to complete the process during check-in and avoid missing your flight – this process can take over one hour. Please arrive early to allow additional time. Mask exemptions only apply for travel onboard flights operated by Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection and do not exempt customers from any requirements that may be imposed by governments, including local, state or foreign countries, (at the origin or destination) or from requirements on other airlines. Please consult your departure, connection and arrival locations for local mask mandate requirements.
Any false claims of a disability to obtain an exemption from wearing a mask or face covering may result in the suspension of travel privileges on any Delta flight for the duration of the mask/face covering requirement and may be reported to appropriate government authorities.

Blocking Seats for More Space On Board
Delta is extending its commitment to block middle or select aisle seats and implementing the following changes for Delta-operated flights departing now through April 30, 2021:
- On aircraft with middle seats: We will block the selection of middle seats in Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin for parties of 1-2. Parties of 3+ can continue selecting seats together.
- On aircraft without any middle seats: We will block the selection of one aisle of seats on smaller aircraft.
- Blocking adjacent seats in First Class.*
- Limiting the total number of passengers on board.
- On select routes where customer demand is high, we will look for opportunities to upgrade to larger aircraft or add more flying to promote space on board.
- Boarding by row, starting from the rear of the aircraft to the front. Delta One, First Class and Diamond Medallion customers may board at any point during the boarding process.
- Tip: Blocked, occupied, available and unavailable seats are visible for every flight in our seat maps when booking, in My Trips, or on the Fly Delta app. Check the seat map as the seat adjacent to yours may be occupied.
* Delta One cabins with two aisles will have no capacity limitation. Parties of 2 in the First Class cabin and in any Delta One cabin with one aisle may select seats together.
Food and Beverage Offerings
We’re paring down our onboard food and beverage options in an effort to reduce physical touch points between customers and employees.
As always, you are welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages on board to enjoy during flight. Since many airport offerings are limited at this time, we recommend packing your own refreshments and encourage you to review TSA guidelines, before bringing food through security checkpoints.
