Cancun International Airport (CUN)
Merida Airport (MID)

Vacation to Merida, the tranquil capital of the state of Yucatan. A city on the rise, its low-key atmosphere is alluring. Magnificent mansions, peaceful promenades, gorgeous geography and a flourishing foodie scene provide even the most discerning traveler with an eye-opening experience.

Where Treasure Runs Deep

A getaway to the Yucatan Peninsula isn't complete without visiting ancient ruins. Chichen-Itza, with its Pyramid of Kukulcan, is the most well known. Gather here to watch the shadow of feathered, serpent-god Quetzalcoatl make its way down the steps of the pyramid during the spring and fall equinoxes. Or, visit the site of Dzibilchaltun to browse 16th-century Spanish swords and weapons. Other local Mayan sites include Ek Balam, Mayapan and Uxmal.

Take your Mexico retreat even further by venturing underground. Merida features a variety of natural caves used by the Maya as a water source and refuge during storms. Enjoy a refreshing swim, or dive in the crystalline waters — it’s an absolutely stunning scene. Nature lovers, find your stride at Celestun, one of the most important national parks in Mexico. Visitors come from all over to witness more than 300 different species of birds, in particular, the pink flamingo. Also, head to the village of Progreso, where you can take a boat out to the Alacranes Reef to swim alongside its impressive marine life.

Explore the quiet Plaza Grande, where the 16th-century Cathedral of San Ildefonso — the oldest cathedral on the continent — provides a dramatic backdrop. Then, hang out in the thriving city center. Dine on Yucatan’s world-renowned fare; browse authentic hammock and trinket shops; or join in dancing and billiards at one of the local venues. Downtown also features the City Museum, full of archeological, pre-Hispanic artifacts and the Cathedral of Merida, one of the oldest churches in the Americas.
