A top travel destination, the capital and economic center of Chile is thriving. Surrounded by mountains, Santiago has survived its share of earthquakes. Though there are only a few historical buildings from the Spanish colonial period left, new skyscrapers and high rises give the city a futuristic feel.

Take a cable car or a long hike up to the summit to Cerro San Cristóbal to take in the sights and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Andes mountains. Or venture further south, and gain altitude, by trekking to the awe-inspiring landscape of Patagonia.
