Flights to Charlotte (CLT)

Called the Queen City, Charlotte is the largest metropolitan area in North Carolina and a commercial hub for the region, due to its role in the banking industry. The corporate headquarters for Bank of America is based here, as well as the east coast operations for Wells Fargo.

The best way to get to know Charlotte is to explore its diverse neighborhoods, from the high-rise buildings and trendy restaurants of Uptown to the suburban shopping mecca of South Park to the artsy converted mill town of NoDa, and beyond. Each one offers a different flavor of the city.

Charlotte is a popular destination for families because of its many kid-friendly attractions, including Carowinds amusement park, Great Wolf Lodge water park resort, and Discovery Place, an interactive science museum.

Athletics are a big draw, too. Professional sports teams include the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, and the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. And the NASCAR Hall of Fame is devoted to the sport of auto racing.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has five concourses and sees 700 landings and departures a day. It is served by 10 airlines, three international and seven domestic, including Delta Air Lines.

For your shopping needs, there are Brooks Brothers, Brookstone, Johnston & Murphy shoes, M.A.C. Cosmetics, Pandora jewelry, PGA Tour Shop, and Tumi luggage. If you need a shine on your shoes or a quickie massage, there is also Executive Shoeshine service and XpresSpa.

Fast-food dining options include Burger King, Cinnabon, Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s, and Bojangles. Full service restaurants include Big Daddy’s Burger Bar, 1897 Market, Beaudevin, Carolina Beer Co., and Tequileria. There is also Starbucks, Jamba Juice, and TCBY.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport offers free WiFi and charging stations. For nursing mothers, there is a Mother’s Room on the upper level of the Atrium across from the chapel. And keep an eye out for the CLT Canine Crew, working therapy dogs on hand to greet visitors.

Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture. At night, check out the rooftop bar at Fahrenheit-Charlotte or the entertainment districts at EpiCenter and AvidXchange.

With 13 rollercoasters, including two of the tallest steel coasters in North America, Carowinds amusement park is big on thrills. There’s a water park, live shows, and kiddie rides, too.

Revel in the history and excitement of auto racing at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The Uptown attraction features a movie, rotating exhibits, historic car showcase, a café, and a store selling official NASCAR gear.

NoDa is a former textile mill town northeast of Uptown that has become the epicenter for the eclectic, artsy crowd. Pet-friendly coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and boutiques beckon.

Taste test locally crafted beers in South End, home to Sycamore Brewing, Wooden Robot Brewery, Lenny Boy Brewing Co., and Triple C Brewing Co.

The Duke Mansion offers the ultimate in Southern elegance. Built in 1915, the Colonial Revival-style mansion was once the home of James Buchanan Duke, the tobacco scion and founder of the Duke Endowment. Now a B&B, the home boasts 20 guest rooms and four-and-a-half acres of landscaped gardens and grounds.

For a more modern luxury resort, The Ballantyne by Marriott offers tons of amenities, including indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, fitness center, sauna, tennis, a PGA Championship golf course and a golf school.

Once the home of Ivey’s department store, dating back to the early 1900s, The Ivey’s Hotel is a 42-room boutique hotel that combines Parisian flourishes with modern design to glamorous effect. Amenities include a fitness center, Sophia’s Lounge and the restaurant 5Church Charlotte.

Charlotte has four distinct seasons with the added benefit of temperatures that rarely reach the extremes. The hottest months are July, August, and September when the average high is in the high 70s. The coldest months are December, January, and February when the average low is in the low 50s. Rainfall is fairly consistent throughout the year, ranging from an average of 3.03 to 4.21 inches a month, so be sure to pack rain gear when you visit. And there’s just enough snowfall -- 4 inches a year on average -- to give you a taste of winter wonderland without lasting too long.
