The city takes its business seriously. Today, it’s known as the “Insurance Capital of the World” and is home to top corporations such as Travelers and Aetna. But Hartford has a little fun, too. The Poor House is a Hartford favorite. With 18 beers on tap, you can play video games and pool while hanging with locals and out-of-towners alike. Hartford's ethnic and cultural diversity is evident in modern day art, restaurants and shops both downtown and in West Hartford. Check out the Tony award-winning theater, the Hartford Stage, which plays host to six productions a year.
One of the most beautiful and scenic regions in the United States, Hartford is considered the gateway to New England. The city’s location in the Connecticut River Valley gives visitors access to sparkling rivers and shimmering shorelines. Fall is an especially pretty time of year to visit the region, as New England’s foliage offers up a palette of reds, oranges and yellows.
Keep an eye out for the amazing architecture too, like the Crosthwaite Building built in 1911 and the Steiger Building built in 1927. After all, Mark Twain, who wrote both Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in Hartford, said it was “…the best-built and handsomest town I have ever seen.” Mr. Twain, we agree.
