Sports Equipment

You can bring most sports equipment with you on your trip, though extra baggage fees may apply to oversized or overweight items. Select an item from the pull down menu below for specific rules and packaging requirements. If an item is not listed below, then normal baggage allowances, fees, and handling policies apply.

Antlers

Do you wish to carry your hunting trophy home with you? It is possible to bring antlers on the plane for an extra fee. Below are the details.

Destination Fee

*CAD amount will be charged exit Canada, and EUR amount will be charged exit Europe.

The following restrictions apply:

  • Antlers will be accepted on Delta Connection flights only if space is available.
  • Antlers must be free of residue and the skull must be wrapped and the tips protected.
  • Linear dimension (length+width+height) cannot exceed 120 inches (305 cm). Any animal rack/antler that exceeds 120 linear inches cannot be accepted.

In some cases, there may not be space available for antlers to travel on the same plane with you. If your hunting trophy has to travel on a different plane, we'll hold them at your destination for you to pick up. Antlers may also be delivered for a fee. Contact Reservations for more information.


Archery

Archery equipment is accepted as checked baggage. Items must be in a durable protective container.

Items in excess of the baggage allowance will be subject to additional, overweight, and oversized baggage fees.


Bicycles

Non-motorized touring or racing bicycles with single seats are accepted as checked baggage on most flights with the exception of some Delta Connection® carriers and aircraft that may not accept bicycles as checked baggage, and may have different limits due to cargo constraints.

Your bike must be packaged in a cardboard or canvas container in one of the following ways:

  • Handlebars fixed sideways and pedals removed
  • Handlebars and pedals encased in plastic, Styrofoam, or other similar material

Canoes

Canoes are not accepted.


Fishing Equipment

Fishing poles up to 120 linear inches (305 cm) are accepted as checked baggage as long as they are contained safely. Oversized baggage fees will apply for items over 80 linear inches (203 cm). All standard baggage charges apply.


Golfing Equipment

Headed to the golf course? You may check one golf bag with a maximum weight of 50 lbs. If the bag exceeds 50 lbs., we can accept the bag, but overweight baggage fees will apply. The linear dimension may exceed 80 inches (203 cm). One item of golfing equipment is defined as one golf bag. Golf clubs will be accepted as checked baggage under the following conditions:

  • Golf bag is packaged within a hard-shell case
  • Golf bag is packaged within a soft-sided golf club travel bag after a limited release has been signed
  • Delta is not responsible for damage noted at the time of check-in or damage due to over-packing the bag.

Hockey and Lacrosse Equipment

Hockey and Lacrosse equipment will be accepted as checked baggage only. Standard baggage fees and policies will apply. Based on purchase date of ticket, fees may apply. One item of hockey/lacrosse equipment is defined as one equipment bag plus two hockey or lacrosse sticks (taped together). If the total weight of the equipment is over 50 lbs. and/or over 80 linear inches (203 cm), special baggage fees will apply.


Javelins

Javelins are accepted but are subject to size and weight restrictions and fees, due to their large size.


Kayaks

Kayaks are not accepted.


Parachutes

Sport parachutes are accepted as carry-on baggage only, provided that none of the items are classified as dangerous goods. (example: pressurized oxygen cylinders).


Pistols

You can bring pistols and accessories as checked baggage as long as they are included in one pistol case and contain:

  • No more than five pistols
  • Pistol telescopes
  • Noise suppressers
  • A small pistol tool case
  • No more than 11 lbs. (5 kg) of ammunition

An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than five pistols.


Rifles and Shotguns

Delta will accept firearms and shooting equipment packaged as follows:

  • One gun case containing up to a total of four rifles or shotguns, plus shooting materials, and tools
  • One gun case containing up to five handguns, one scope, and tools
  • One bow and quiver of arrows and maintenance kit enclosed in a case or container of sufficient strength to protect the bow and quiver from accidental damage

An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than two rifles. You can check up to two shotguns and two shotgun cases. Ammunition is limited to 11 lbs. (5 kg). An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than two shotguns.


Scuba Equipment

We accept dive bags containing scuba equipment other than an empty dive tank as checked baggage provided the weight does not exceed 150 pounds (68 kg) and is not greater than 80 inches (203 cm), a total of length+width+height. The transporting of empty dive tanks as baggage does include a fee, which varies depending on where you are traveling.

Scuba equipment accepted in excess of the baggage allowance will be assessed the appropriate fee based on destination.


Shooting equipment

Shooting equipment is accepted as checked baggage only. It must fit within the very specific criteria that we outline below.

  • Declare to the Delta representative that you are checking a firearm.
  • Declare the existence of a firearm to security personnel if a security checkpoint is prior to the Delta counter.
  • All firearms must be declared by the passenger to a Delta representative at the main ticket counter .
  • Present firearm(s) unloaded and sign a "Firearms Unloaded" declaration.
  • Firearms must be packed in a locked manufacturer's hard–sided container specifically designed for the firearm, a locked hard–sided gun case, or a locked hard–sided piece of luggage. Handguns may be packed in a locked hard–sided gun case, and then packed inside an unlocked soft–sided piece of luggage. However, a Conditional Acceptance Tag must be used in this case.
  • Maintain entry permits in your possession for the country or countries of destination or transit.
  • Ensure small arms ammunition is packed in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood, plastic or metal boxes and provide separation for cartridges.

If you need to travel with a weapon as checked baggage, you are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all Federal, State, or Local laws regarding the possession and transportation of firearms. TSA locks are not approved for securing firearms. For more information about this regulation you can visit the TSA site.

If you are transporting a firearm to the United Kingdom as checked baggage, a permit from the United Kingdom is specifically required. You must contact the United Kingdom for more information about securing this permit.

Ammunition in excess of 11 lbs. per passenger or that contains potential projectiles is not allowed.


Skateboards

Skateboards are accepted as checked baggage and standard baggage policies apply.


Ski or Snowboard Equipment

If you are hitting the slopes, you can bring your ski and snowboard equipment as checked baggage. One ski/pole bag or one snowboard bag, and one boot bag is accepted per person. The combined weight of the ski/snowboard bag and the boot bag may not exceed 50 lbs. or excess baggage fees will apply. The linear dimension may exceed 80 inches (203 cm).


Surfboards

Destination Conditions of Acceptance
For travel within or between the United States (including U.S. Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico) and Canada One item of surfing equipment is accepted as baggage for 200 USD/CAD/EUR* each way.
For travel between the United States (including U.S. Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico) or Canada and all international markets 200 USD/CAD/EUR*
For travel between all international markets 200 USD/CAD/EUR*
For travel to/from Brazil 100 USD/CAD/EUR*
*CAD amount will be charged exit Canada, and EUR amount will be charged exit Europe.

Additional surfboard restrictions and exceptions are outlined below:

  • Delta Connection carrier surfboard acceptance and charges may vary.
  • If the surfboard is not in a protective case, you must fill out a limited liability release before the surfboard will be accepted.
  • Surfboards are allowed one board per bag; additional boards in a bag will be charged, per board.
  • Surfboards over 70 lbs. will be charged the excess weight fee.
  • Between Honolulu and Maui, there is a 20 USD/CAD/EUR* fee.
  • Boogie boards smaller than or equal to 43 inches (107 cm) will be accepted as part of the free allowance.

Vaulting Poles/Javelin Equipment

Vaulting poles are accepted, but may not be greater than 80 inches (203 cm) in length or more than the alloted weight for excess baggage. All standard baggage charges apply.


Windsurfing Boards

Additional windsurfing equipment restriction and exceptions:

  • Windsurfing equipment exceeding 109 linear inches (277 cm) will not be accepted.
  • Windsurfing equipment over 70 lbs will be charged the excess weight fee.
  • Due to size limitations, windsurfing equipment will not be accepted on Delta Connection carriers or MD-80 aircraft.

Fees established by the contract of carriage in effect at the time of ticket issuance will apply.
