Whether it's for competition or you're just taking your bicycle on vacation, we can carry many types of sporting goods on Delta flights. Choose your item from the pull down below to check if it is accepted and the corresponding excess baggage fees and packaging requirements for the item.

If the item is not listed below, normal baggage allowances, fees, and handling policies apply.

   
Item Conditions of Acceptance
Archery equipment Archery equipment is accepted as checked baggage. Items must be in a container of sufficient strength to protect the equipment.

Items in excess of the baggage allowance will be subject to excess baggage fees.

Bicycles Non-motorized touring or racing bicycles with single seats are accepted as checked baggage, bicycles as checked baggage will be $175 (for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and $300 (for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

Your bike must be packaged in a cardboard or canvas container in one of the following ways:

  • Handlebars fixed sideways and pedals removed
  • Handlebars and pedals encased in plastic, Styrofoam, or other similar material
Some Delta Connection® carriers and aircraft may not accept bicycles as checked baggage, and may have different limits.

Fishing equipment Fishing Poles up to 120 linear inches are accepted as checked baggage if properly encased. Excess baggage fees will apply for items over 80 linear inches. All standard baggage charges apply.
   

   
Item Conditions of Acceptance
Golfing equipment One golf bag is acceptable up to 50 pounds as a checked bag. If the bag exceeds 50 pounds, excess baggage fees will apply. The outside linear dimensions may exceed 80 inches and no excess baggage fees will apply. All other standard baggage charges apply.

One item of golfing equipment is defined as one golf bag.

Golf clubs will be accepted as checked baggage under the following conditions:

  • The golf bag is packaged within a hardshell case.
  • The golf bag is packaged within a soft sided golf club travel bag after the customer signs a limited release.
  • Delta is not responsible for damage noted at the time of check-in or damage due to overpacking the bag.

Javelins Javelins are accepted through December 4, 2008. After that date Javelins will no longer be accepted as checked baggage.

Parachutes Sport parachutes are accepted as carry-on baggage provided no items are classified as dangerous goods (example: pressurized oxygen cylinders).

Scuba equipment Dive bags containing scuba equipment, other than an empty dive tank, are accepted as checked baggage. Empty dive tanks will always be subject to a fee of $175 (for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and $300 (for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

Scuba equipment accepted in excess of the baggage allowance will be assessed the appropriate fee based on destination.

Shooting equipment Shooting equipment is accepted as checked baggage.

When checking a firearm, you must:

  • Declare to the Delta representative that you are checking a firearm (If a Security Checkpoint is prior to the Delta ticket counter, you must declare the existence of a firearm to security personnel.)
  • Present firearm(s) unloaded and sign a "Firearms Unloaded" declaration
  • Lock the firearm(s) in a hard-sided, crush-proof container and retain the key or combination
  • Maintain entry permits in your possession for the country or countries of destination or transit
  • Ensure small arms ammunition is packed in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes
Firearms transported to the United Kingdom as checked baggage require a permit from the United Kingdom. The passenger must contact the United Kingdom for more information regarding this permit.

Ammunition in excess of 11 pounds per passenger or that contains incendiary projectiles is prohibited.

Rifles

Delta will accept firearms and shooting equipment packaged as follows:

  • One gun case containing up to a total of four rifles or shotguns, plus shooting materials, and tools
  • One gun case containing up to five handguns, one scope, and tools
  • One bow and quiver of arrows and maintenance kit enclosed in a case or container of sufficient strength to protect the bow and quiver from accidental damage
An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than two rifles.

Shotguns

  • two shotguns
  • two shotgun cases
  • 11 pounds (approximately 5 kg) of ammunition
An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than two shotguns.

Pistols

One pistol case containing:

  • five pistols
  • pistol telescopes
  • noise suppressers
  • a small pistol tool case
  • 11 pounds (approximately 5 kg) of ammunition
An excess baggage fee will apply to cases containing more than five pistols.
   

   
Item Conditions of Acceptance
Ski or snowboard equipment Ski and snowboard equipment are accepted as checked baggage.

An item of ski or snowboard equipment is defined as:

  • One ski/pole bag or one snowboard bag, and
  • One boot bag
The combined weight of the ski/snowboard bag and the boot bag may not exceed 50 pounds or excess baggage fees will apply. The outside linear dimensions may exceed 80 inches and no excess baggage fees will apply.

Surfboards One item of surfing equipment is accepted as baggage for $175 (for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and $300 (for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

Additional surfboard restrictions and exceptions:

  • Delta Connection carrier's surfboard acceptance and charges may vary.
  • If not in a protective case, you must fill out a limited liability release before we accept the surfboard.
  • Surfboards are allowed one board per bag; additional boards in a bag will be charged, per board.
  • Surfboards over 70 pounds will be charged the excess weight fee.
  • Between Honolulu and Maui, there is a $20 charge each way.
  • Boogie boards smaller than or equal to 43in/107cm will be accepted.

Windsurf boards One item of windsurfing equipment is accepted as baggage for $175 (for travel within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and $300 (for travel outside the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico).

Additional windsurfing equipment restriction and exceptions:

  • Windsurfing equipment over 109 inches will not be accepted.
  • Due to size limitations, windsurfing equipment will not be accepted on Delta Connection carriers or MD-80 aircraft.
