Fragile, Bulky, & Other Items

Should you carry it on, check it, or buy it a seat of its own? Find out everything you need to know about bringing fragile, bulky, or other items with you on a Delta flight.

Fragile Items as Carry-On or Checked Baggage

Fragile items that meet baggage allowance standards are allowed as carry-on or checked baggage as long as they meet certain requirements. Carrying on or checking a fragile item may involve signing a Limited Liability Release Form.

Cabin-seat Baggage

Traveling with something too large and/or too fragile to check or put in the overhead bin? You have the option of purchasing a ticket at the best available fare for your fragile item. You can then store your item in any passenger seat with a physical bulkhead or divider in front of the compartment. Contact Reservations for fee information.

Bulky items must meet the following criteria to fit into a seat:

  • Item must not exceed 100 lbs. (45 kgs).
  • Item is securable with a seatbelt to avoid shifting during the flight.
  • Item is packaged or covered safely to avoid potential injury to passengers.
  • Item doesn’t restrict access to, or use of, any required emergency or regular exits or aisle of the cabin.
  • Item does not obscure any passenger's view of the seatbelt, no smoking, or exit signs.
  • Item must not contain dangerous goods.
  • Item must be secured in a seat in the same cabin as the owner, and preferably next to the owner.

Media Bags

Camera, film, video tape, lighting and sound equipment that is tendered by representatives of network or local television broadcasting companies or commercial film-making companies will be accepted as baggage at the fees noted below. Valid Photo ID with Company Insignia will be required.

Christmas Trees

Do you want to bring some holiday cheer to your destination? You can indeed bring your Christmas tree with you. We will accept cut Christmas trees as limited-release baggage on all flights within the United States, including flights to/from Hawaii. However, all Christmas trees will be subject to baggage allowance and baggage size restrictions, as well as some other rules:

• Trees need to be adequately packaged with the root ball or cut base and all branches wrapped and secured using a burlap-type material.
• If you are traveling into Hawaii and checking a Christmas tree as baggage, you must include it on your declaration form and the tree must pass agricultural inspection.

Fragile/Limited Liability Release Items

We will accept certain fragile or perishable items without a limited liability release as long as they meet the requirements outlined below:

  • Item is packaged in the original factory-sealed container
  • Item includes internal protective packing material
  • Item is typically designed for shipping

Items that are not appropriately packaged, and are not assistive devices, will only be accepted upon completion of a limited liability release.

Assistive devices will be accepted regardless of the packaging. However, we reserve the right to complete a limited liability release noting pre-existing damage. We will also request the passenger's signature on the limited liability release form. Passengers presenting assistive devices as checked baggage are encouraged to purchase excess valuation. For more information, visit Declaring Baggage Value.

Cremated Remains

Cremated remains can be accepted as either carry-on or checked baggage.

Carry-on:
Remains must pass through the x-ray machine. If the container is metal and prevents the screener from clearly being able to see what’s inside, the container will not be allowed through the security checkpoint. TSA suggests the passenger purchase a temporary or permanent crematory container of lighter material such as wood or plastic which can easily be x-rayed. TSA is not allowed to open the container under any circumstances.

Checked Baggage:
A passenger may transport cremated remains as checked baggage provided the remains successfully pass through security screening.

Normal bag fees apply.
