Platinum System-wide Upgrades now eligible on Northwest flights

Platinum Medallion® members can now redeem their System-wide upgrade on Northwest Airlines® operated flights. Members should continue to contact Delta for their upgrade request.

Redeposit/Reissue Fee Exemption Changes Update

Effective March 1, 2009, the Award Ticket reissue and redeposit fee for Platinum Medallion members will be waived for two different reservations per year. Platinum Medallion members will be charged $50 for any additional Award Ticket changes. The 50% Medallion Qualification Mileage and base mileage bonus in Y, B and M booking classes will remain in 2009.

In early February, all members will be able to link and transfer miles between their SkyMiles and WorldPerks accounts.

Delta and Northwest Policy and Fees Update

For travel on or after Dec. 5, customers flying within the United States will be charged $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second checked bag, consistent with Northwest’s existing policies.

Customers who purchased Delta tickets on or before Nov. 5, 2008, and who are traveling on or after Dec. 5, 2008, will be charged $50 for a second bag, but will be permitted to check their first bag without charge pursuant to Delta’s previous policy.

All customers flying in First or Business Class, including SkyMiles Medallion members and WorldPerks Elite members, will receive up to three checked bags, up to 70 pounds each, for free. 

SkyMiles Medallion members and WorldPerks Elite members flying in Coach Class will receive up to two checked bags, up to 70 pounds each, for free. U. S. Military personnel on active duty with travel orders will continue to be able to check up to 10 pieces of luggage on Delta- and Northwest-operated flights.

Delta and Northwest Merger Update

We’re excited to announce that SkyTeam partner Northwest Airlines is now a part of Delta.

This is an important milestone for our airline, but for you, it’s business as usual right now. Please know that your SkyMiles frequent flyer miles are safe and your Medallion status is secure. And, you may continue to:

  • Earn Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) and miles as normal with Delta and our partners. Please remember to add your SkyMiles number to your flight reservations.
  • Redeem miles with our new, industry -leading three-tier Award Travel structure, SkyMiles Online Auction and Medallion Marketplace.

Enjoy elite upgrades on all Northwest flights

As a SkyMiles Medallion member, now when you book a Northwest-operated flight, you will be eligible for a complimentary upgrade.

When flying Northwest you’ll also enjoy:

  • Waived baggage fees on your first two bags.
  • Your status recognized and printed on your boarding pass.

Automatic Notification of Cleared Upgrades

Wondering if your Complimentary Medallion upgrade has cleared?

  • If your request clears at least 14 days before your flight, you'll be contacted using your "Advance Updates" preference set in your Profile.
  • If your request clears within 48 hours of departure, you'll be notified using your "Last-minute Updates" contact preference set in your Profile.

If we can't reach you through your contact preferences, we'll use the email address or phone numbers you provided during your ticket purchase.

So now, more than ever, it's a good idea to make sure all your contact information is up-to-date in your Profile (under the Contact Me tab, within the Delta Messenger Flight Notifications section).

Upgrade Requests Transferred to the Airport Standby List

Beginning, January 17, when you check in at delta.com, your pending complimentary upgrade request will automatically be transferred to the airport standby list at the airport. So, you no longer have to stop at the kiosk or an agent to add your upgrade request when you check in online. We'll transfer your request without you having to do a thing.

Medallion Upgrade Automation

We've made it even easier for Medallion members to use complimentary upgrades. We will now automatically request your upgrade when you make a reservation over the phone, at the airport, or through a travel agent, as well as at delta.com.

No additional bag fees for Medallion members

Delta SkyMiles Medallion members, including our Platinum, Gold, and Silver medallions and Northwest's Elite members traveling in coach within the United States or Internationally will receive up to two bags, up to 70 pounds each, for free on Delta, Northwest and Delta Connections-operated flights only. Delta SkyMiles Medallion members, including our Platinum, Gold, and Silver medallions, and Northwest's Elite members confirmed at check-in in First Class or BusinessElite, traveling within the United States or Internationally will receive up to three bags, up to 70 pounds each, for free on Delta, Northwest and Delta Connections-operated flights only.


Military bag fees

Military personnel on active duty with travel orders may check up to 10 pieces of luggage on Delta and Northwest mainline flights or four pieces on Delta Connection flights, up to 100 lbs. each, free.

Travel may be on other airlines.
