If you are beginning to plan your first trip with an infant or child less than 2 years old, here are a few helpful links:
Infants and children less than 2 years old may travel for free within the U.S. if an adult (12 years or older) holds the infant in arms or places the infant in an FAA-approved child restraint during take-off and landing. Visit our Child Fares section to find out additional requirements and pricing information for infant travel.
Travelers may find it helpful to allow a little extra time between flights during infant travel to ensure adequate time for breaks and bathroom trips along the way. Use our Airport Maps section to help plan your layovers before you even reach the airport. You may also find it helpful to coordinate your trip timing around the infant’s nap time or bedtime.
If your infant travel destination requires a passport and/or travel visas, you will need to secure a passport for your child. Learn how to submit a passport application for newborns and infants by visiting the U.S. Department of State’s Special Requirements for Children page.
If your child is traveling as an Infant in Arms, you may view or change your seat assignment prior to arriving at the airport in the Itineraries section after you have purchased your flight. Infant travel restricts your ability to occupy some seats due to FAA regulations. To make sure both you and your child are safe and comfortable during infant travel, use our Infant and Child Seating and Aircraft Types and Layout sections for more information. Once you check in, a designation of Infant in Arms will be printed on your boarding pass.
Use our Infant and Children’s Baggage section for specific information on carry-on items such as child restraint seats, strollers, and diaper bags during your infant travel experience. During security check-in, the TSA will usually make a special provision for items such as medications and baby formula. Check out the Traveling with Kids section of their website for more information and video demonstrations relating to infant travel and carry-on baggage restrictions.
