SkyMiles Program Updates FAQs

Have your questions about the SkyMiles Program Updates? Find answers to common questions here.

Can I combine cabin types and/or Award levels in a single Award Ticket?

Yes. SkyMiles members have the ability to combine Economy, First, Business and BusinessElite® Class into one round-trip Award Ticket.

Without a mileage expiration policy, does that mean that my account will stay active even if I don’t purchase a flight on Delta for several years? Or is there an activity requirement to keep the miles in my account?

Your miles will stay active even if you do not purchase a flight or have any other account activity – the miles currently in your account and those earned in the future are yours to keep regardless of account activity. However, we do ask that you maintain current contact information in your records with us. We reserve the right to close dormant accounts if you do not respond to our efforts to confirm that your account is still active.

My miles recently expired. Will Delta reinstate those miles since the mileage expiration policy has been eliminated?

No, the elimination of mileage expiration is effective immediately and applies to 2011 and beyond. Miles that expired on or before December 31, 2010 will not be reactivated on a complimentary basis. You have the option to pay a reactivation fee to reinstate your miles. Learn more about reactivating your miles.

I recently paid a reactivation fee to reinstate my miles. Will Delta refund that fee now that mileage expiration no longer exists?

No, the elimination of mileage expiration is effective immediately and applies to 2011 and beyond. Miles that expired on or before December 31, 2010 will not be reactivated on a complimentary basis, nor will Delta refund any reactivation fees paid to reinstate previously expired miles.

If my miles expired prior to 2011, what options do I have to get my miles back?

If your miles expired in the past 24 months, you have the option to pay a reactivation fee to reinstate your miles. You must reinstate all your miles (expired miles cannot be returned in increments), and the fee to reactivate your account depends on how many miles you are reinstating. Learn more about reactivating your miles.

I recently received a letter stating that my miles would expire in January 2011. When I go online to check my SkyMiles account, it appears as though my mileage balance is still active. Can I use my miles and are they active?

Yes. The elimination of mileage expiration is a new policy effective January 1, 2011. As such, no miles will expire on or after this date. If your miles were set to expire in January, they are now active and available for you to use.

What was the mileage expiration policy?

Previously, miles expired 24 months after your last qualifying mileage activity (i.e. the earning, receiving or redemption of miles).

Why did Delta eliminate mileage expiration?

Customers have told us they value their miles. With this change, we now are the only major U.S. carrier without mileage expiration, so customers can fly with us and use miles with confidence on their terms and timeframe. In short, this is great for our customers. Additionally, it helps us keep valued customers active and engaged with the airline and the SkyMiles program.

How can miles be redeemed?

Miles may be redeemed for worldwide travel on Delta, which serves more than 350 worldwide destinations. For U.S.-based members, miles also may be redeemed for merchandise, gift cards, car rentals, hotel stays, newspapers, magazines and one-of-a-kind auction packages.

Without mileage expiration, does this mean that there will be more competition for Award Tickets and even more limited availability?

No, members can count on Award availability from Delta at all levels, and we are committed to providing even more redemption options. Delta offers a wide range of choices for customers to use their miles, including Award Tickets, merchandise, gift cards, car rentals, hotel stays, newspapers, magazines and one-of-a-kind auction packages.
