Las Vegas

McCarran International Airport (LAS)

This 24-hour happening town draws visitors to its casino floors day and night. But the Wild West boomtown that first morphed itself into a hotbed for showgirls and gambling is a family vacation destination that's so much more than just "the Strip."

One of the first things you’ll likely notice flying into Las Vegas is that it is truly an oasis in the desert. This fantasy vacation destination is a neon spectacle when the sun sets, powered by the nearby Hoover Dam, named for President Herbert Hoover and constructed during the Great Depression.

Nevada made gambling legal in 1931 — at the height of dam construction — and downtown Las Vegas became the place to be for the dam workers with casinos and speakeasies to help them unwind after a long day pouring concrete. Today, the action buzzes on the casino floor with the thrill of the high rollers — on more than 4,000 gaming tables — and the excitement of hitting a jackpot on one of the 116,000+ slot machines inside the Las Vegas city limits.

Live Like a High Roller

Thanks to family friendly entertainment like Cirque du Soleil, the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage and theme casinos like Paris and New York-New York, Las Vegas has become a mecca for kids of all ages. Many casinos offer free shows in addition to high end, world class magic and music revues (as well as adult cabaret, natch).

The foodie scene of Las Vegas has moved well beyond the $1 buffet. Although those old school deals can still be found, the real culinary action is in hole-in-the-wall ethnic eateries and signature, destination restaurants from some of the finest chefs on the planet.
