Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)
It's Texas with a twist that makes this capital city so appealing for all who visit. In Austin, you'll still see the cowboy boots walking the streets, but piercings, tattoos and all of Austin's other weird eccentricities are equally represented. Who's game to watch the bats fly from under the Congress bridge tonight?
Because it's in the Hill Country, Austin has lush scenery and dedication to the outdoors. Locals take to the Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake for sunshine, running, walking or biking. And with Barton Springs only a few miles south of downtown, you can dip your toes in this natural swimming hole.
Austin, One and All
Back in the seventies, Austin became a haven for music lovers when Willie Nelson made his mark on the town. Today, the city has grown into an iconic music destination with a street named after its most famed musician. And thousands of toe-tapping tourists recognize that potential and come to town to attend the Austin City Limits and South by Southwest festivals each year. But the Live Music Capital of the World wouldn't be named as such if you couldn't mosey into a bar and hear live tunes any night of the week. Antone's, the Continental Club and the Moody Theater (home of the ACL Live series) are notable Austin venues, but if y'all came to Texas for some honky-tonk try the Broken Spoke and two-step the night away.
When you visit Austin, you'll need to stick to the city's two main food groups: barbecue and tacos. Austin has perfected the balance between smoke and char in beef brisket, pulled pork, ribs, turkey, pork sausage and…well, we could go on and on. If you come to Texas in search of a meat-cure with Texas barbecue, you'll find no better first impression than the sell-until-sold-out Franklins or Muellers. If tacos are your take, try TacoDeli, Torchy's or Maria's Taco Express for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Austin also has one of the best food truck cultures in the nation, so don't be afraid to buy cupcakes, grits or crepes from a trailer.
You don't need South by Southwest or ACL as an excuse to come to Austin. The city boasts some of the best barbecue, tacos and outdoor havens in the country.
