For a different twist on a tourist favorite take a canal cruise in the "Venice of the North" at night: you'll find the illuminated buildings and bridges intoxicating.

For your cerebral side, Amsterdam offers over 50 museums from Van Gogh to Rembrandt and even houseboats. Don't miss the one and only gay monument in the world, The Homomonument, opened in 1987, it's close to the Westerkerk and Anne Frank House.

Need help? Stop by Pink Point, a gay and lesbian info kiosk located at Homomonument, Westermarkt (on the Keizersgracht). Friendly volunteers will answer all your questions about gay Amsterdam.

Voted one of the best pride parades outside of the U.S., Amsterdam Pride 2012 (beginning of August) takes place along the famed canals. With over 250,000 spectators, it's rivaled only by Queensday (April 30th) and the cultural 'Uitmarkt/Sail' Watch (end of August).

Berlin

Berlin

Berlin is the go-to city for art, culture, history, and epic nightlife. And with a diverse population — and an openly gay mayor to boot — it's easy to see why this European capital is at the top of many LGBT travelers' "must-see" lists.

When hitting the streets, there are three neighborhoods you must visit for their unique scenes and vibrant culture: Kreuzberg is home to a large Turkish community and the alternative, Euro-punk gay scene; Schoneberg is the oldest gay neighborhood in West Berlin with tons of trendy hotspots; and Prenzlauer Berg is an uber-cool, artsy district in the old East quarter. No matter where you find yourself, it's certain Berlin will have you under its spell — all day and all night.

Brussels

Brussels

In the last ten years, Belgium’s pioneering laws on gay marriage and adoption have helped make this country — and its capital — a welcoming place for lesbians and gays.

Located in the heart of the Paris/Amsterdam/Cologne triangle — headquarters of NATO and the EU — the city’s smart, cosmopolitan mix is reflected in its gay life.

Brussels’ gay district revolves around Grand Place, and its main artery is the rue Marché au Charbon. Scenic Dutch townhouses, cozy pubs, swish lounges and sunny outdoor cafes await. Beer lover? Sample from some of the world’s most unique brews. For dinner, dine al fresco in the classy Galeries St. Hubert area, the best for people watching.

Feeling spendy? Walk up Avenue Louise in the Ixelles-area toward the upmarket boutiques and housewares shops of the Place du Châtelain. Or browse the popular weekend antiques market.

Brussels’ monthly club nights are legendary amongst gay Euro clubbers. Party night trains and buses bring revelers from all over Western Europe. Sophisticated and high-spirited, this hot scene rivals London or New York.

Summer brings two international events: the IGLTA’s Annual Global Convention, the premier event for LGBT tourism professionals, and the Fête de la Musique, an annual free festival celebrating jazz, classical, pop, rock, chanson and world music.

Los Angeles

The beautiful people, sunny weather and happening club scene makes for a great visit to Los Angeles. L.A. is really a line of several cities in a row, all with their own distinct personality and style. There's mellow Santa Monica, with its funky seaside neighbor Venice. The Valley incorporates a string of cities, including gay-popular Studio City.

West Hollywood is probably the best known gay district in L.A. but it's not the only one. On the famous Sunset Strip, if you're looking to see and be seen, check out one of the many local hip nightclubs and swanky hotels. Another popular community among the gay and lesbian crowd is Silverlake, which is home to a wide array of LGBT nightlife. Mellow Long Beach, south of L.A. and bordering Orange County, also has a thriving gay population.

Almost every one of L.A.'s mini-cities has its own LGBT bars and businesses — so you'll never be far from the action, no matter where you stay. Considered by many the most romantic city in the world, Paris remains a gay and lesbian traveler’s hotspot. Since 2001, Paris is one of the few major world cities to boast an openly gay mayor. Zurich

Zurich

A surprisingly innovative city, Zurich may be one of the most exciting gay and lesbian destinations in the central European region. Proudly calling itself "The Little Big City," Zurich is known for its world-class techno music club scene, featuring world-famous DJs.

Despite the fact that it's a gleaming modern city, Zurich still retains the air of an intimate village. A very foot-traffic friendly city, Zurich is situated on the banks of the Limmat River, and the entire city can be explored easily without a car.

Zurich is split between the east and west banks of the river.
