Ticket Changes

Travel plans don't always go as planned. Here's some essential information that you'll need if your ticket has to be changed. Before you change your ticket, it's also important to understand Fares and Ticketing Rules.

Change Fees

Based on the fare rules, you may have to pay a service fee and/or a difference in fare. For travel within the 50 United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the fee is $200 for Delta-marketed flights.

For travel outside the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the change fee for Delta-marketed flights is typically $200 to $500, but can vary based on location and type of fare. Changes are usually permitted only to the return portion of an international itinerary.

An additional charge applies if you would like us to change a ticket that we didn't issue. This charge applies to any ticket issued in the United States or Canada by anyone other than us, such as:

  • A traditional travel agency.
  • An online travel agency.
  • Another airline, including SkyTeam and codeshare partners.

The external ticket handling charge does not apply to:

  • Tickets originally issued by us—Reservation Sales, ticket office, or delta.com.
  • Involuntary changes like cancellations, delays, or schedule changes.
  • Tickets issued with military or government fares.
  • Customers completing a SkyMiles upgrade.
  • Same-day Confirmed Travel.

The $50 external ticket handling charge is:

Types of Tickets

You can check the itinerary receipt you received by email or mail to determine if your ticket is refundable or nonrefundable.

You may change your ticket without paying a change fee provided all fare and ticket rules are met and seats are available. If you do not wish to reschedule your travel, you can apply for a refund.

The policies regarding ticket changes for nonrefundable tickets vary. Bulk fare or tour fare tickets issued through certain third-party websites and travel agents are not eligible for any changes. Basic Economy tickets (E) for travel on or after February 1, 2015, are not eligible for any changes. Check Same-day Travel Changes to review your options if you only want to change the time you depart or request an upgrade.

Ticket Validity

When a ticket is changed, our automated process will calculate the most cost-effective way of applying the tickets remaining value to your new itinerary.

For travel between and/or within Canada, United States, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, your ticket must be reissued and all travel completed within one year from the original date of issue.

For all other travel, your ticket is valid for one year. If travel was started, your ticket must be reissued and all travel must be completed within one year of the start date. If travel was not started, your ticket must be reissued and travel must begin within one year of the original date of issue.
