You should never feel insecure about handing over your possessions to an airline. That's why we're making every effort to give you as much control over your bags as possible, short of strapping on a vest and helping the crew load the luggage yourself. From guidelines and fees by country to declaring baggage value and ultimate bag-tracking abilities with the Fly Delta app, here are all the information and tools you need to feel confident about checking in your luggage.
Checking In & Paying Online
Within 24 hours of your departure, you can tell us how many bags you will check and pay any fees quickly and easily online. That means one less thing you will have to do at the airport. When you arrive at the airport, you can drop off your checked baggage at the nearest baggage drop, marked with red "Baggage Drop" signage, or curbside check-in station (available within 6 hours of departure time). You may also check your bags at the airport kiosk, ticket counter, or curbside; however, please note that higher checked baggage fees may apply if paid at the airport.
If your bag exceeds weight or size limits, please review the Additional, Overweight, and Oversized Baggage section. You may also carry on one bag and one small personal item at no charge. Visit our Carry-on Baggage section for more information. More restrictive baggage rules apply on some flights operated by our Codeshare partners.
All baggage fees listed below are current and applicable for all ticketing on or after today when Delta's baggage rules are determined to apply. If you ticketed before today, please refer to Delta's previous checked baggage page for more details. You can also refer to your e-Receipt issued by Delta for detailed baggage fee information.

Fees for the first and second checked bags vary based on your flight destination. We've outlined them all here.
Do you have status with Delta or status with another affiliated airline (Medallion® Members, Alaska Airlines or SkyTeam®)? Perhaps a credit card with Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express? Or are you part of the United States Military? See below for special exceptions that may apply when you check in with Delta.

SkyMiles Medallion members, SkyMiles Credit Cardmembers from American Express and other exceptions
At the time of check in with Delta for a Delta-marketed and Delta-operated flights (including Delta Connection), all SkyMiles Medallion members, SkyTeam® Elite & Elite Plus Members and Alaska MVP & MVP Gold members will be able to check one additional bag over the standard cabin allowance (see above) for travel outside the United States and Canada and/or travel between the United States & Canada and select Caribbean destinations. This benefit is subject to the weight and size restrictions of your cabin of travel. Furthermore, the benefits listed below extend to up to 8 travel companions on the Medallion member's reservation for a total of 9 passengers.
All bags in excess of the free allowance will be assessed using the standard cabin pricing.

Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express Baggage Benefit
At the time of check in with Delta for a Delta-marketed and Delta-operated flights (including Delta Connection), our passengers who hold a Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express - Gold, Platinum, or Reserve - will be allowed to check their first bag for free system wide. The benefit is subject to the weight and size restrictions of your cabin of travel. The benefit extends to up to 8 travel companions on the Cardholder's reservation for a total of 9 passengers.

Size & Weight Restrictions
To avoid extra charges for oversize or overweight baggage, your checked bag must:
- weigh 50 pounds (23 kg) or less
- not exceed 62 inches (157 cm) when you total length + width + height
Each special item you're checking counts as one bag. What constitutes as a "special item"?
Declaring Baggage Value
Liability for lost, delayed or damaged baggage is limited unless you have purchased a higher valuation for your checked baggage. You can extend your baggage value for a fee at check-in if you wish. See Excess Valuation for details about purchasing higher valuation. Otherwise, here are our standard liability limits:

Despite our best efforts, it’s possible that your luggage shows evidence of wear and tear at the end of its journey. We must state that Delta assumes no liability for minor cuts, scratches, and dents, or for items that protrude from luggage, such as retractable handles, wheels, etc.
Here are all of the liability restrictions and exceptions:
- Maximum liability is not automatic—damage or loss value must be proven.
- No maximum liability applies to wheelchairs or assistive devices.
- Delta is not liable for unsuitably packed items.
- Delta is not liable for loss, damage, or delay of baggage that may result from a security search conducted by any local, state, or federal agency.
All items with declared excess value may be inspected by the check-in agent.
Excess Valuation Chart
Delta Air Lines is not liable for checked or unchecked baggage in excess of the limits described above unless you decide to claim excess valuation on your belongings. Here are the details if you decide to declare a higher valuation:
- The declared value may not exceed $5,000.
- The item is properly described and properly packaged and undamaged.
- You pay an excess value fee at check-in.
The excess valuation charge is applicable only when the declared value is greater than the applicable liability limit.

Delta is not responsible or liable for cash, camera equipment, commercial effects, computer software and equipment, electronic equipment, fragile articles, jewelry, lifesaving medication, negotiable papers, irreplaceable business documents, works of art or other similar valuable items contained in checked or unchecked baggage. These types of items should be carried on — and kept in sight.
Delta will only collect excess valuation for declared baggage from your point of origin to:
- a Delta destination
- the first Delta stopover
- your point of transfer to another carrier
Note: You must re-declare and pay the applicable charges each time you check your excess baggage.

At the time of check in with Delta for a Delta-marketed and Delta-operated flights (including Delta Connection), active duty U.S. military personnel on orders to or from duty stations and dependents traveling with them or active U.S. military dependents traveling on relocation orders may check the following at no charge:

Track Checked Baggage
Keep your bags in sight at all times. Virtually speaking, at least. In order to track your checked bags, just enter the Bag Tag Number that you received at the time of baggage check-in. If your bags have been delayed, you can check their status here as well. Enter the File Reference Number located on the Property Irregularity Report you received when you reported your delayed baggage. For the ultimate in tracking abilities, download the Fly Delta app, which lets you track your bags even at 30,000 feet.
