Kailua-Kona (KOA)

Book Vacation Package Now

Twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands combined, and the youngest of the Hawaiian archipelago, Hawaii Island, known as “Hawaii’s Island of Adventure,” offers experiences found no where else on Earth. Stroll along striking black- and green-sand beaches; take a helicopter tour for a stunning view of the erupting Kilauea volcano, one of the most active in the world; or play golf on jet-black lava flows.

This island hosts 266 miles of coastline and two main cities: Hilo on the east coast and Kona on the west coast. Downtown Hilo offers a taste of local shopping, dining and culture, with gardens housing the island’s amazing assortment of orchids. Art lovers and collectors will adore the array of museums, galleries and performance venues.

The sunny Kona District includes everything from coffee farms to Hawaiian landmarks. Stretching for 60 miles on Hawaii Island’s lava-lined western coast, this expansive area is home to Kailua-Kona's shops, restuarants and nightlife. In the heart of the district, this town is the perfect location for a walking tour of historic places like the museum of Hulihee Palace, King Kalakaua’s summer house.

Go anytime, as trade winds keep the weather comfortable year-round. Peak whale-watching season is January to early April. The Merrie Monarch Festival is the world’s premier hula event held in Hilo on Easter weekend.

First-Timers Guide

From lava-strewn deserts and snow-capped mountains to dense rain forests and tropical plantations, every imaginable outdoor activity is available on Hawaii Island. Don't miss stargazing at the Ellison S. Onizuka Center for International Astronomy on Mauna Kea, the tallest sea mountain in the world. And, explore the planetarium and interactive exhibits in the Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a World Heritage Site, is an unforgettable spectacle of simultaneous creation and destruction. Hawaiians believe the goddess Pele lives in the unpredictable Kilauea volcano, which has been erupting since 1983. Hike the trails to discover cavernous volcano tubes, and, if you’re lucky, view an active lava flow close up.

Another fun activity for the whole family is visiting the Parker Ranch Center in Waimea for a glimpse into both historic and modern-day life at one of the largest cattle ranches in the country. Enjoy wagon rides, and learn the ways of the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). And, add viewing the 442-foot Akaka Falls and the 80-foot Waianuenue, also known as Rainbow Falls, in Wailuku River State Park to your list of must-do activities.

Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park is sacred to the people of Hawaii Island as historic royal grounds and a sanctuary for ancient Hawaiian refugees. A self-guided walking tour allows you to glimpse early Hawaiian culture through temples, homes, burial plots and more. And, the carefully preserved Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site is the largest restored temple in Hawaii, constructed in 1791 by Kamehameha the Great.
