Bereavement Fare - International Travel

In the event of a death or imminent death of an immediate family member, a customer may have to travel at the last minute. Customers may not have the time to qualify for an advance purchase discounted fare. To help our mutual customers, we offer special fares for bereavement travel.

Reservations must be booked and ticketed by Delta Air Lines. Travel agents can contact Delta Reservations for booking, pricing, and program rules.

Valid for SkyMiles Members needing to travel due to death or imminent death of an immediate family member. If the passenger is not currently a member they may immediately join SkyMiles by enrolling via

Required Documentation

The following information is required so customer’s can purchase a ticket using discounted Bereavement Fares:

  • Passenger's relationship to the deceased
  • Name and phone number of funeral home, hospital, or hospice
  • Name of doctor (if applicable)

Purchase Requirements

Travel agents may issue a miscellaneous charge order (MCO) for the applicable bereavement or published fare for round-trip travel only.

Tickets need to be purchased and travel has to start within seven days of the death or imminent death of the immediate family member. Required documentation is subject to verification.

Note: Combining any other airline space or other DL space is not permitted and will be written on a separate ticket. 

Applicable International Markets

International travel applies between any two points where Delta (DL) flies except:

  • Between the 50 United States and Canada
  • Between the 50 United States and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
  • For travel wholly within the 50 United States

Minimum/Max Stay

  • No minimum or maximum stay requirement applies other than the normal ticket validity
  • Travel must originate within seven days of death or imminent death


  • Changes are permitted including outward destination.
  • Same Day Confirmed not permitted
  • Standby is not permitted

Stopover / Open Jaw

  • Stopover - Not permitted
  • Open Jaw - A single open jaw is permitted

SkyMiles Upgrades

SkyMiles upgrades are not permitted.

Refund of Previously Ticketed Passengers

Ticketed passengers may be eligible to receive a refund on previously issued tickets:

  • Refund is offered due to death of ticketed passenger
  • Refund is offered due to death of immediate family member
  • Any companion traveling with a passenger impacted by the death of a family member would also be eligible for a refund

Ticketing informaiton and documentation must be mailed to Passenger Refunds.

Note: Requests for refund or fare adjustments must be accompanied by a copy of the death certificate or a physician's statement on his/her letterhead stationery. We regret that we are unable to accept obituary notices.

Note that Bereavement Fares are only available on the following carriers: DL/CP/OH/EV/OO/S5/F8/RP/XE/9E/XJ.
