Bereavement Fare - Domestic Travel

In the event of a death of an immediate family member, a customer may have to travel at the last minute. Customers may not have the time to qualify for an advance purchase dicounted fare. To help our mutual customers, we offer special fares for bereavement travel.

Reservations must be booked and ticketd by Delta Air Lines. Travel agents can contact Delta Reservations for booking, pricing, and program rules.

This fare may be used in the case of a clergy who will be presiding over the funeral.


Valid for SkyMiles Members needing to travel due to death of an immediate family member. If the passenger is not currently a member they may immediately join SkyMiles by enrolling via

Required Documentation

The following information is required so customer’s can purchase a ticket using discounted Bereavement Fares:

  • Passenger's relationship to the deceased
  • Name and phone number of funeral home, hospital, or hospice
  • Name of doctor (if applicable)

Purchase Requirements

Tickets need to be purchased and travel has to start within three days (seven days for International) of the death of the immediate family member. Required documentation is subject to verification.

For domestic travel related to imminent death please contact Delta and inquire about using Delta's Medical Emergency Fare program.

Note: Travel agents are not permitted to issue an MCO or ticket for bereavement fares.

SkyMiles Upgrades

Platinum Medallion® upgrades and North American upgrades are permitted. Mileage upgrades may be used with the exception of award codes D411, D412, D625, D627.

Refund of Previously Ticketed Passengers

Ticketed passengers may receive a refund if death has occurred within 30 days of the scheduled travel date:

  • Refund is offered due to death of ticketed passenger
  • Refund is offered due to death of immediate family member
  • Any companion traveling with a passenger impacted by the death of a family member would also be eligible for a refund

 Travel Companions and immediate family members may qualify for one of two options:

Option 1 - Full Refund

  • Full refund of remaining coupons
  • Copy of Death Certificate required
  • Mail to Passenger Refunds

 Option 2 - Apply residual towards future travel

  • Apply ticket value to purchase of future air travel - applicable current fare applies
  • The Administrative Service Charge will be waived if travel is within 30 days from original scheduled date
  • Copy of death certificate required

Note that Bereavement Fares are only available on the following carriers: DL/CP/OH/EV/OO/S5/F8/RP/XE/9E/XJ.
