Delta takes the time and care to ensure a safe and comfortable travel experience for every animal. For a pet’s safety and its owner’s peace of mind, Delta has implemented specific pet guidelines, requirements and restrictions on animal travel.  

Below are some restrictions that all travel agencies should know.  Many other restrictions and requirements can be found on delta.com on the Pet Travel Requirements and Restrictions page. 

Aircraft Restrictions

  • 767 Restrictions

Animals will not be accepted as checked baggage or cargo on any Delta operated 767 aircraft.  There are no exceptions to this restriction for any passenger.   No military exceptions.

  • Pet in Cabin Restrictions
    • Pets in Cabin are not allowed in the First Class / BusinessElite / Business Class cabin on any international segment, regardless of aircraft type due to insufficient space. 
    • The number of PETC per flight is limited to:

Documentation

Clear and concise documentation of the pet is required to provide necessary service to the customer.  Both pet in hold (AVIH) and pet in cabin (PETC) require the following documentation:

  • Appropriate SSR (AVIH or PETC)
  • Breed of animal
  • Weight of animal
  • Kennel dimensions

Destination Restrictions

Many countries and states have strict regulations regarding international pet travel.  Please see U.S. Domestic & International Pet Travel for more information.

Animal Breed Restrictions

Delta no longer accepts snub-nosed or pug-nosed dogs and cats as checked baggage. Certain breeds may be acceptable for transport as cargo via Pets First. There are no military exceptions for pet breeds.

Seasonal Embargoes

  • Summer embargo dates are May 15 through September 15 and pets may not be checked as baggage on Delta and Aeromexico operated flights.  Pets may be shipped as cargo but temperature restrictions apply.
    • Military or government personnel with permanent change of station orders for duty may check their pet as baggage during the embargo if the Temperature Restrictions are not exceeded. The spouse of the active duty military or government employee may check the pet with their military ID. The PNR must be documented.
      • Breed restrictions are not waived for military
      • 767 restriction is not waived for military
  • Winter embargo dates are November 1through March 31 which does not allow pets accepted as checked baggage on flights to or from:
    • Sun Valley, ID (SUN)
    • Twin Falls, ID (TWF)
    • Jackson Hole, WY (JAC) 

Kennel Restrictions

All kennels must be capable of loading upright in the aircraft bin as required by the Animal Welfare Act and the International Air Transport Association Live Animal Regulations.

  • Giant Kennels are not accepted as checked baggage on Delta operated flights.  These kennels may be shipped as cargo with the exception of MD88, MD90 and 737 aircraft. 
  • Delta Connection flights do not accept Extra Large or Giant Kennels.
