During the month of October, Delta Air Lines once again takes flight for the fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and funding the search for a cure. Now in its fifth year of support for the cause, the airline continues to unite employees and customers through numerous “pink initiatives” that benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).
Delta launched this year’s global awareness campaign with a commemorative event, lighting the exterior of the New York-JFK air traffic control tower pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month.
The airline was joined by representatives from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, BCRF and Hard Rock International PINKTOBER Artist Ambassador Melissa Etheridge. Immediately following the illumination, Delta hosted a charter flight for breast cancer survivors aboard its signature “pink plane,” a pink-and-white Boeing 757, from JFK to Washington D.C.-Reagan National Airport. While in flight, Melissa Etheridge performed a special acoustic rendition of her hit single “I Run for Life.”
“It is inspiring to see that each year our employees and customers become increasingly more involved, reaffirming our commitment to raising awareness and funds for this important cause,” said Joanne Smith, senior vice president of In-Flight Service. “It’s fitting that Delta launched its breast cancer awareness campaign in New York, where we continue to grow our presence in the communities where our employees live and work. In addition to the unique pink lighting of JFK’s control tower, having Melissa perform on one of our flights was an emotional, heartwarming experience, for she’s a survivor herself.”
Throughout the month of October, Delta will raise funds for the cause by selling its signature pink lemonade to customers traveling on all Delta flights worldwide for $2 per glass, with net proceeds benefiting BCRF. Contribute to the cause and shop for co-branded Delta and BCRF pink products, including pink luggage tags, tumblers, aprons and pens, for $2-$16, with a portion of proceeds benefiting BCRF. The items are available beginning September 15 while supplies last.
